How to take care of your real hair extensions

by Keisha Roberts

Like the idiom goes, “The grass is greener where you water it.” For anything to thrive, you must maintain it with proper care. Your body wave hair is exactly the same. If you’re thinking about getting body wave hair or you have some and need tips on how to properly maintain it, we’ve got you covered. In this article, we want to give you 3 pro tips to taking care of your body wave hair (or any kind of extensions). Ready? Let’s go!

Tip #1 - INVEST IN QUALITY EXTENSIONS. Period.

Sorry to use all caps, but we cannot emphasize this enough. So many people skip over the fact that you need good hair to begin with. With the ever increasing rise of wigs and extensions, it’s very easy to find a deal online. But don’t be fooled. All hair is not good, quality hair. Sure, you might be able to save a few dollars, but what will you face in the long-run? We will give you a hint - “There will be matting, tangling and shedding, oh my!” To properly care for your extensions, you must start off with a good product. Repeat after us, “I will not buy cheap body wave hair even if it’s a good deal!” So therapeutic, right?

Tip #2 - Shampoo with proper products

Treat your extensions like you would your own hair. Repeat after us, “Sulfates are not my best friend!” Sure, sulfates appear to be hydrating and moisturizing, but will suck the life out of your hair’s natural moisture and shine; they really are a frenemy. Here’s why...

When you shampoo with them, they strip oil and dirt away from the hair. That’s not good. Your hair needs to retain a bit of its natural moisture and oils to stay healthy. When it strips away too much moisture, it will leave your hair dry and unhealthy. So, whenever you wash your hair, make sure you’re working with shampoos and conditioners that mention moisture, hydration and/or be sulfate free.

Tip #3 - Dry your hair the right way

After you’ve shampooed your hair (of course with sulfate-free shampoo and/or conditioner), paddle brush it, and then let it air dry. Using the paddle brush will help smooth away the tangles, while allowing it to air dry. Ultimately, it will reduce the stress of possible heat damage. The main goal here, though, is to make it easier for the hair to dry, and to do so without the use of excessive heat because heat will make your extensions appear dry and brittle over time. As a result, it will create a hot, tangly mess. You might be thinking, “Well, what if I don’t have time? Wigs shouldn’t take longer than my normal hair care routine!” Here’s a pro tip: If you don’t have the time, put the extensions in front of a fan to air dry. It’s fast, easy and has no heat. Repeat after us, “Less direct heat the better!”

Unfortunately, unlike our natural hair, should we not properly maintain our extensions, we can’t shave them off and watch them grow back. Sure, we may be able to revive them for a short while, but once the hair is done, it’s done. That’s why we believe in the following…
